14: is focus overrated?

I spent some time shooting with a Nikon 43-85mm f/3.5, which is a pretty crummy early zoom. My sample has an extra feature that is is incapable of focusing past a few feet at the wide end. So I tried to take interesting pictures which were out of focus.
