5cm f/1.5 Tokyo Optical Co. Simlar
5cm f/1.5 Tokyo Optical Co. Simlar
Filter size: 40mm (!) I am going to try to get a 40mm - 46mm adapter from HeavyStar. It is possible some samples of the Simlar have other filter sizes.
Close focus: 3.5 feet
Aperture range: f/1.5 - f/16 (no detents)
Aperture blades: 12 rounded
Depth of field scale for f/1.5 - f/16, IR index.
Comments: The Simlar, made by the predecessor to TopCon and sold on Leotax cameras, seems to be a rare lens. People put outrageous prices on them on E-Bay, and there isn not much information about them out there. Of course, Google helpfully auto-corrects "Simlar" to "Similar". My sample has an oily aperture and two scratches on the front element, but is otherwise in good shape. The build quality and chrome-covered brass looks a lot like the old Nikkors and Canon Serenars. I love the image quality: it runs circles around my Summitar. Generally I find the lens to be sharp with a lovely look.
I use a plastic slip-on 42mm cap.
More info: Camerapedia, MF forum, Rangefinder Forum.
