Mamiya/Sekor 500TL, 50mm f/2.

Mamiya/Sekor 500TL with Mamiya/Sekor Auto 50mm f/2

Camera: Mamiya/Sekor 500TL circa 1966 - 1973

Lens mount: M42 screw mount
Shutter: 1 - 1/500s plus bulb
Depth-of-Field Preview: Yes, push in on film advance lever once it is angled out to turn on the meter.
Metering: TTL, weird rectangular region at bottom center of the frame.
ISO: 25 - 800
Prisms/focusing aids: fixed prism, central microprism.
Self timer: N/A
Flash: Optional cold shoe clamps onto prism, 1/60 flash sync, PC connectors.
Film plane indicator: yes

Comments: Pull back partially on film advance lever to turn on meter, press in the center of the film advance lever to return the lever to its normal position and turn meter off. Slow shutter speeds sound a little slow. Awesome 70's tapestry camera strap.

Manual: Butkus

Issues: Inoperable meter. Camera locked up in the cold but once it warmed up I was able to convince it to drop the mirror.

Lens: Mamiya/Sekor Auto 50mm f/2

Filter size: 52mm
Close focus distance: 1.75 ft / 0.5m (marked)
Aperture range: f/2 - f/16
Aperture blades: 6
Depth of field scale for f/2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, and IR focusing index.

Comments: Ridged metal focusing ring. Screw in metal lens cap! Has automatic/manual switch for aperture. Focusing ring uneven (needs CLA probably) on my sample.

The photos: all Tri-X

This old lens: Canon 50mm f/1.8 FD

Lens: Canon 50mm f/1.8 S.C. (single coated?)

Filter size: 55mm (unlabeled)
Close focus distance: 2 feet/0.6 meters, marked.
Aperture range: f/1.8 - f/16
Aperture blades: 5
Depth of field scale for f/4,8,11,16, and IR focusing index.

Comments: I find the 5-bladed aperture distracting, and the plasticy build quality of the lens does not impress me.  But it makes nice photos.

The photos: I think I got the most keepers of any of these cameras with the Canon, although I think that's more luck than anything to do with the camera.

(With polarizer)

I look a little deranged.  This was how I labeled the rolls of film from each camera.

I find the 5-bladed aperture very distracting in this shot.

Canon TX

Camera: Canon TX circa 1974 - 1979

Lens mount: Canon FD "breech lock"
Shutter: 1 - 1/500s plus bulb
Depth-of-Field Preview: yes, big lever on the front of the camera
Metering: center weighted TTL
ISO: 25 - 1600
Power:
Prisms/focusing aids: fixed prism, central microprisms
Self timer: N/A
Flash: hot shoe, 1/60s sync, PC connector
Film plane indicator: yes

Comments: solid, no nonsense shooter.

Manual: Butkus
More info: Photoethnography

Issues: Meter likely inoperable, but I haven't put a battery in it. It took a mercury battery, but one ought to be able to use a Wein Cell.

Additional comments:
If I was only shooting 35mm film (i.e. I didn't want to double dip by using old manual focus lenses on DSLR bodies), the Canon FD line might be the best way to get a complete system on the cheap. I assume it is because the lenses are orphaned. Check out KEH for a selection.
