Nikon's budget series of lenses. The Series E lenses have simpler optical designs, some are single coated instead of multicoated, and they are somewhat more plastic-y than the AI and AI-S lenses of the time. Several of these lenses were converted in to early AF-D autofocus lenses.
There are two cosmetic variations: older (and, in my opinion, more unsightly) versions with black plastic grab rings and square-nubbined grips (circa 1977-1981) and newer version with the usual silver metal grab ring (circa 1981-1985).

28mm f/2.8 E
black version: (circa '79-81) Approximately 61000 made.
chrome version: (circa '81-'85) Approximately 191000 made.
These optics are also found in the 28mm f/2.8 AF. I think these are overpriced.
35mm f/2.5 E
black version: (circa '79-'81) Approximately 97000 made.
chrome version: (circa '81-'85) Approximately 99000 made.
I had a surprising amount of difficulty finding copies.
50mm f/1.8 E
black version: (circa '79-'81) Approximately 816000 made.
chrome version: (circa '81-'85) Approximately 1430000 made.
These optics are also found in (one version of) the 50mm f/1.8 AI-S and the 50mm f/1.8 AF.
100mm f/2.8 E
black version: (circa '79-'81) Approximately 109000 made.
chrome version: (circa '81-'85) Approximately 82000 made.
135mm f/2.8 E
chrome version: (circa '81-'85) Approximately 77000 made. These seem way overpriced compared to the 135mm f/3.5 and 135mm f/2.8 AI/AI-S lenses.
36-72mm f/3.5 E
chrome version: (circa '81-'85) Approximately 219000 made.
70-150mm f/3.5 E
black version: (circa '80-'81) Approximately 69000 made.
chrome version: (circa '81-'85) Approximately 62000 made.
70-210mm f/4 E
chrome version: (circa '81-'85) Approximately 184000 made. This design is also used in the 70-210mm f/4 AF. Looks quite similar to the 80-200mm f/4 AI-S.
