Nikon Multicoated Non-AI Lenses

Multicoated Non-AI Lenses
Circa 1973-1977

These are classic non-AI lenses with multicoating, and have a "·C" marking to distinguish them from the older single coated versions. The 28mm f/2 N and 35mm f/1.4 N were multicoated since their release in 1970, but they did not have the "·C" marking.

Some single-coated lenses continued to be made during this period: 20mm f/3.5 UD (-'76), 35mm f/2.8 S (-'74), 35mm f/2.8 P.C. (-'75), 105mm f/4 bellows (-'74), 300mm f/4.5 H (-'74), 50-300mm f/4.5 (-'75), and the 200-600mm f/9 (-'75). Because of this there feels to be relatively few ·C marked lens designs.

Here are some comparisons between single and multicoated versions of the same lens:

Some of the lens designs (the 105mm f/2.5, the 28mm f/2, and the 35mm f/1.4) stuck around for decades and it can save you a lot of money to buy them in the older styles and have them cut to AI.

The letters represent the number of lens elements:
T - tri - 3
Q - quad - 4
P - penta - 5
H - hexa - 6
S - septa - 7
O - octca - 8
N - nona - 9
UD - undeca -11

Most of these lenses have scalloped metal focusing rings, but a some have rubber focusing rings with a diamond pattern: almost all of the zooms, the reflex lenses, some of the 55mm f/2.8 micros, the 135mm f/2.8 Q, and the 180mm f/2.8 P.

The last few lenses with silver filter threads switched to black filter threads in the multicoated versions: the 50mm f/2 H·C, the 50mm f/1.4 S·C, the 135mm f/3.5 Q·C, and the 43-86mm f/3.5. The 135mm f/2.8 Q·C moved the engraving to the front of the lens inside of inside the filter threads.

Some lenses have both C and K versions, some lenses only have C versions (usually because they were discontinued, like the 45mm f/2.8 GN·C and 200mm f/4 Q·C), and some lenses only have K versions (usually because they were a new design). A few lenses (mostly fisheyes) skipped both versions, probably because they came multicoated but predated the C marking. However, the 180mm f/2.8 had single coated, multicoated and AI version with no K version, and the 300mm f/4.5 has single coated versions and K versions with no C marked versions. Oddly, the 20mm f/3.5 UD and 35mm f/2.8 S were never given multicoated versions.

As always this is a strictly worse version of Photosynthesis.
